How To Reclaim Your Mental Game
As an athlete, the vast majority of problems that we experience in Our Game, are closely tied to this feeling of being “stuck.”

That can be stuck in a rut, stuck being unmotivated, stuck in doubt, stuck in worry or fear, stuck in insecurity, stuck in lack of belief, stuck in anger or frustration. And sometimes it’s unclear, but we just feel stuck.

This feeling is due to what we’ll call “The Trap.”
When an athlete makes the decision to take tennis “seriously” or “competitively,” the idea of improvement becomes a new top priority.

“To be better than you are.”

When improvement becomes a priority, we begin to “measure” ourselves and our game based upon the outcomes we create.

We then proceed to compare these outcomes to our peers and our own expectations, in an attempt to track progress.

But by judging and comparing your current self, based on past outcomes, you are defining your current self by the past, creating nothing but a distorted and limited view of yourself.

And although we can definitely learn from the past, this is how we drag the past into the present, and end up repeating the same patterns.
Mental Training for a Complete Performance
How To Reclaim Your Mental Game
This is how we actively create the feeling of being stuck.

What’s important to see, is that it’s THROUGH these very measurements and comparisons that we form and reinforce false and limiting beliefs about ourselves and our process.

“I’m not where I should be.”
“I’m worse than that person.”
“I get nervous in the first round.”
“I can’t close out the match.”

And then it’s from this point we make the assumption that “getting unstuck” happens by fixing, solving, or changing these “problems”.

We think that, “if I know what’s wrong, then I can fix it!”

And that sounds great in theory, but the truth is, what you focus on grows. And as you focus on fixing, solving, and changing yourself, you simply reinforce the beliefs that YOU are not good enough.

Your efforts are reinforcing the very problems you are hoping to solve. Which, is a tell tail sign of The Trap.

The more you intend to “improve,” the more you “measure” yourself.
The more you “measure” yourself, the more “stuck” you feel.
The more “stuck” you feel, the more you intend to “improve.”

Can you see the vicious cycle?
Mental Training for a Complete Performance
How To Reclaim Your Mental Game
This keeps us stuck, striving for the outcomes that we believe will tell us that we are enough. But the reason we don’t feel “enough” in the first place, is because we’re dependent on the outcome for validation.

The Trap is a vicious cycle, which makes it hard to explain logically. But if we had to summarize The Trap this would be it.

   - Most athletes define success through outcomes.
   - But we can’t get the outcome all the time.
   - And so, when we don’t, we feel like we’re failing.
   - This sense of failure causes us to analyze what’s wrong.
   - From this point, we “Think” about our game, fixated on what’s not good enough, in an attempt to improve it.
   - And through thinking about what isn’t good enough, we form and reinforce the limiting beliefs and patterns hindering the natural processes of improvement and performance.

And that’s the trap right there.

Our capability appears to be stuck in problems that we can’t shake.
And our hope tends to be stuck in outcomes that we can’t reach.

You’re stuck between who you think you are. Rooted in judgment.
And who you think you should be. Rooted in expectation.

And putting more effort into a failed system doesn’t make it succeed.

Every single athlete in every single sport has had to find a way out of this trap, if they have gone on to access their potential.

How To Reclaim Your Mental Game
The Trap operates on a fundamental assumption. And becoming aware of this assumption is how you find “The Way” out of the Trap.

That assumption is this…

“I’m not good enough.”

This belief makes improvement a priority.
This belief creates doubt, fear, and worry.
This belief keeps us needing external validation, like outcomes, to tell us if we’re good enough.
This belief keeps us focused on what isn’t good enough.
This belief keeps us endlessly reaching for the next outcome.

But this belief is also completely false.
This belief is completely a byproduct of comparing YOUR unique process to another person’s.

Really just stop and think.

How much of your effort goes into TRYING to be better than you currently are??
How much of your effort goes into TRYING to get to a different place than you are??

Although these efforts may be true, they are rooted in lack, insecurity, and fear.

This points at an incredibly important fundamental principle...

The quality of your action is equal to the quality of your being.

How To Reclaim Your Mental Game
In other words, if you’re BEING insecure, you’re going to think, act, and decide in an insecure manner. Your thoughts, actions, and choices are coming from an insecure place.

Trying means control.

And you can’t control a performance.

You can only GIVE a performance.

And you can only GIVE what you HAVE, Now.

A fundamental FACT is that ANY form of improvement or performance happens through, and ONLY through, how you engage with THIS moment. And the onslaught of The Trap, the confusion and pressure it creates, is severely hindering your ability to BE Present with THIS moment.

The only WAY out of The Trap, is in.

IN to this moment.

You don’t achieve a Peak Performance by reaching upwards or striving forwards.
You achieve a Peak Performance by moving inwards.

As you move IN to the moment, you RISE to the occasion.
And as you RISE to the occasion, you’re FREE to Give a Complete Performance.

When you begin to direct your effort and energy into the moment, into Playing YOUR Game, the problems associated with The Trap begin to dissipate.

The fear of failure fades away.
The pain of insecurity is released.
The weight of pressure is lifted.

And the reason is because you stopped TRYING to LOOK for the solution to your problems, and you started BEING the solution.

And the moment you start BEING your OWN solution, is the moment you no longer need outcomes to validate yourself. And the moment you no longer need external validation, is the moment you’re free from The Trap. Free to Play your Game.

And really, what more do you want as an athlete?

The outcome is ALWAYS uncertain. That’s what makes The Game, The Game.

What you can be certain of, is that in this moment, you’re free to BE as you ARE.

Free to Go for your Shot.
Free to Trust your Intuition.
Free to Play your Game.

The Way to Your Dreams, is not to be better than you are.
The Way to Your Dreams, is to be here.
The Way to Your Dreams, is to be yourself.
The Way to Your Dreams, is to be Complete.

Completely ok with who you are.
Completely ok with where you’re at.
Completely Yourself.
Completely Involved.

This is what we do.

How To Reclaim Your Mental Game
This is what Complete Performance is about.

We invest our effort inwards, into this moment.
To become more completely ourselves.
So, we can express ourselves outward, through each moment.
Completely free to Play Our Game.

So, in a way, Mental Training is about…

Getting out of The Trap, and into The Moment.
Getting out of The Mind, and into The Game.
Getting out of Your Head, and into Your Heart.

If The Trap is really just an over complication, just us getting in our own way trying to control outcomes, then Mental Training is about RETURNING to the essence of what an athlete IS and what an athlete DOES.

You are a Tennis PLAYER. And you are HERE to PLAY.

You just forgot… that Play is The Way.

How To Reclaim Your Mental Game
The process of exiting The Trap, finding The Way, and Reclaiming Your Mental Game, comes down to taking ownership over how you’re being, or what we call Being in State.

Every single moment is brand new.
And everything in the moment, including you, is brand new.

When we are present with how we’re being, when we’re in State, we’re capable of seeing that newness. And it’s through seeing the newness that we can harness the opportunity that each moment possesses. This is how we Expand Our Game.

We make new choices. Express ourselves in new ways. Listen to a truer inner voice. And it’s through that exploration that Our Game expands, regardless of the outcomes that were created.

If we’re stuck in The Trap, and we’re just “thinking” about what’s going on and trying to control outcomes, we’re seeing everything through the lens of the past.

On the surface, ownership appears to be a burden. But in reality, the opposite is actually true. Taking ownership over how you’re being is how you enter the driver seat of Your Game.

And it’s only the driver that has the POWER to navigate the newness of the present moment.

So, in other words, when you are actively driving your game by taking ownership over how you’re being, then and only then, are you in the position to improve or perform.

How To Reclaim Your Mental Game
When we “Think about” Our Game, we reinforce patterning, and create stagnation.

When we “Play” our Game, we see the newness, and create expansion.

Were you expecting someone else to drive your car?
To make these choices FOR you?
To wield YOUR power for you??

Taking responsibility for how you’re being on the court is scary yes, but that’s why we began the book with a dedication to the athletes that are READY.

Because if that athlete is you, if you ARE ready to OWN your process, then it’s time for you to learn HOW.

You need to know HOW to handle the many challenging dynamics that tennis requires.

Not through gimmicks, mental distractions, or routines.

But by being present THROUGH the challenge.

By meeting those challenges in STATE.

And not because you have to, but because you want to.

STATE implies ownership. Doing it FOR yourself.

Because it’s only from this place of self-empowerment, only by MEETING the challenge, do we transform our relationship to it.

In fact, it’s the VERY ACT of meeting the challenge that empowers YOU.

The very act of meeting the challenge transforms YOU into the solution you were previously seeking.

How To Reclaim Your Mental Game
Did you really think the solution to your problems was going to be found anywhere outside of you?

Only WE can shatter our OWN glass ceilings.

And taking ownership over how you’re being, or being in STATE, is how you transform yourself into a ceiling shattering machine.

Because at the end of the day, our interactions with “challenge” are binary.
1) Avoid it
2) Meet it

There’s an unlimited number of ways to avoid it by being in The Trap.

But there’s only one way to meet it.
Right Now… In STATE…

As we meet our fear in State, it’s transformed into Confidence.
As we meet our worry in State, it’s replaced with Composure.
As we meet our insecurity in State, it fuels our Focus.
As we meet our discouragement in State, we grow in Heart.
As we meet our doubt in State, we gain Command.
As we meet our disbelief in State, we discover the Flow.
As we meet our stress in State, we become free to Play.

Just imagine that.

Imagine Your Game free from fear, worry, insecurity, discouragement, doubt, disbelief, and stress…

Imagine Your Game equipped with Confidence, Composure, Focus, Heart, Command, Flow and Play…

These are what we call the 7 PlayStates.

These are the key states of being for an athlete to gain mastery over.

They are different ways of meeting the variety of challenges we face in our athletic journeys, resulting in a more COMPLETE Athlete capable of giving a COMPLETE Performance.

A CP Athlete.
